Gary Moore and BB King show how its done

There’s no doubt that Gary Moore has a legacy as one of the finest guitarists this island has ever produced.   A Belfast boy who truly learned his trade on the boards and deserves the many plaudits he receives as a consumate musician.

My only concern with Gary Moore is that I have always felt he overplays and too often drowns out his backing musicians forsaking a lightness of touch and sublety for noise and power.

However this version of ‘Since I Met You Baby’ with BB King exemplifies the talents of both – a real hot sweaty gig in the best sense of the word.  And Moore is on fire in this vid clip. Catch the riff he plays at 2.23.

Nice one mate, I really enjoyed watching both Gary Moore (RIP) and Jeff Beck playing with BB King. True, Moore sometimes cranks the volume and goes for his chops a lot, but then he was a heavy rock guitarist for as long as he was a bluesman, so the show-off aspect is probably a big part of his legacy, and hard to let go of. Both Moore and Beck are clearly in their element playing with such a legend. And what a gent BB is, letting his younger musicians rip and play their hearts out while he holds back – and I have seen him absolutely shred his guitar as well as anyone when he plays on his own – but he is never in a hurry to show off his chops when someone else is sharing the stage with him. The mark of a musician at the top of his game.
