Radical reform of Local Government needed to redress the democratic imbalance

Radical reform of Local Government needed to redress the democratic imbalance

Did you know that  with 883 seats available in city and county councils across the country, only 130 of these are in areas covered by the four Dublin councils  – City Council, Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown,  South Dublin and Fingal.

Although  Dublin has 28% of the population and about a quarter of all electors, it elects  a mere  15% of the county and city councillors.

Read Noel Whelan’s article  –  Local Polls in June will gauge the anger of the Irish electorate

Whelan makes the point that,  although Fianna Fáil are dramatically down in the polls, because Dublin only represents 15% of the candidates, a poor showing in Dublin by FF will not be as dramatic when measured nationally.
